Create a New Tradition at the New Years Eve Boat Drop

Create a New Tradition at the New Years Eve Boat Drop Details

You’re probably familiar with New York City’s famous New Years Eve apple drop in Times Square, but have you ever experienced Cambridge’s local version? It’s the New Years Eve Boat Drop located on the 500 block of Poplar Street. The boat that’s “dropped” is a miniature deadrise, which is one of the most common working boats you’ll see out on the waves today, and at midnight on December 31st, the city rolls it down an 80-foot ramp in order to ring in the New Year.

If that sounds like fun to you (or even just a curious event that you’d like to check out), simply head down to Poplar Street around 10 p.m. to join the gathering crowd as you pay homage to the city’s maritime traditions. While you wait for midnight to approach, you’ll be able to enjoy food and drinks at nearby restaurants, view the popular Crab Basket Christmas Tree, and enter to win the boat-naming contest with a creative moniker all your own.
